Nobody tells you that some mornings the hardest thing you'll do all day is get out of bed.

Not because you're lazy. Not because you don't care. But because your body is running on empty and the idea of a structured morning routine — the kind with cold showers and journaling and green smoothies and gratitude lists — feels not just impossible but almost insulting.

If that's where you are right now — this post is for you.

The Problem With Most Morning Routine Advice

Most morning routine content is written for people who already have energy. It assumes you woke up  rested, motivated and ready to optimize your day. It gives you 12 steps before 7am and calls it self care.

For anyone dealing with burnout, chronic exhaustion, nervous system dysregulation or just an ordinary hard season of life — that advice doesn't just fail. It makes things worse. Because when you can't complete the routine you were promised would change your life — you blame yourself. You decide you're the problem. You give up entirely.

You are not the problem. The routine was never designed for you.

What a Low Energy Morning Actually Needs

A gentle morning routine for low energy days has one job — to help your nervous system transition from sleep to wakefulness without triggering your stress response.

That's it. Not productivity. Not optimization. Not transformation before breakfast.

Just a soft landing into the day.

The Gentle Morning Routine for Low Energy Days

This routine has no time requirement. No perfect order. No minimum number of steps. Do what you can. Leave what you can't. Come back tomorrow.

✦ Before you reach for your phone — pause

Just one moment. Eyes open. One slow breath. Feel the weight of your body in the bed. You don't have to be anywhere yet. You don't have to be anything yet. Just arrive in the morning gently before the world gets its turn.

This single pause — practiced consistently — begins to shift your nervous system's relationship with mornings from braced to soft.

✦ Drink something warm before anything else

Before coffee if possible — a glass of warm water with lemon or a calming herbal tea. Warm liquid in the morning gently wakes your digestive system, hydrates your body after sleep and sends a physical warmth signal to your nervous system.

On low energy days this is sometimes the whole routine. And that is completely enough.

✦ Move your body for two minutes — not to exercise

Stretch your arms above your head. Roll your shoulders. Rotate your neck slowly. Drop your chin to your chest. This isn't exercise — it's your body announcing to itself that it's awake and functional. Two minutes of gentle movement releases overnight tension and signals to your nervous system that your body is safe and capable today.

✦ Do one thing that feels like yours

Before the emails. Before the responsibilities. Before the mental load of the day begins — do one small thing that belongs entirely to you. A few pages of a book. Five minutes of journaling. A cup of tea on the porch. One song you love.

This isn't indulgence. This is your nervous system learning that mornings can contain something for you — not just demands from everyone else.

If people pleasing makes this step feel impossible — read How to Stop People Pleasing When You're Already Exhausted.

✦ Set one gentle intention — not a to-do list

Not what you need to accomplish. Not what you're behind on. Just one word or one sentence that captures how you want to feel today. Soft. Present. Enough. Patient. Brave.

This is not manifesting. It's direction. A gentle compass point for your nervous system to orient toward when the day gets hard.

What to Do When Even This Feels Like Too Much

Some mornings the gentle routine above will feel completely out of reach. The exhaustion is too deep. The weight is too heavy. Everything feels like too much before it's even begun.

On those mornings — the routine is just this:

✦ Drink some water

✦ Unclench your jaw

✦ Take one slow breath

That's it. That's the whole morning routine. And it counts.

On the days when everything feels like too much — my free 5-Minute Gentle Reset is designed for exactly that moment.

Building Your Own Gentle Morning

The most important thing about a low energy morning routine is that it's yours. Not borrowed from
someone with different energy levels, different circumstances or a different nervous system.

Here are some questions to help you build the version that actually fits your life:

✦ What's the ONE thing that would make your morning feel softer?

✦ What's the first thing that drains you in the morning — and can you delay it?

✦ What does your body need most right now — warmth, movement, quiet or nourishment?

✦ What would a morning that belonged to YOU look like?

There are no wrong answers. The right routine is the one you can actually do on your hardest days — not just your best ones.

A Gentle Reminder

You don't have to earn your morning. You don't have to be productive before 9am to deserve a good day.

You don't have to show up perfectly to show up at all.

A soft morning is not a failed morning. It's a regulated one.

And a regulated nervous system is the foundation everything else is built on.
